I've had a kitten for about a month now. She is the sweetest little fuzz ball I could have ever asked for. Whoever told me that cats are low maintenance was lying. I think it's just because she's a baby, though. She is constantly climbing all over me, laying on my papers, crawling into my lap, and sleeping on my pillow. She wakes me up every morning by trying to eat my eyelashes off. That is probably the most disturbing habit she has right now. I took her with me to Fate's over the weekend. I always feel bad when I leave for any amount of time because I can hear her crying and crying. I'm sure she forgets about me as soon as I'm actually gone. So if I was going to be gone all weekend, OF COURSE I was going to take her with me. She absolutely loves his puppy Fate. She would chase him and jump at him and climb all over him. The sweetest moment was when I found her curled up on his back when they were both asleep. I think she actually misses the pup. I'll have to take her to visit again soon. Between the kitten, and the boyfriend (did I forget to mention that part?), and work, I've been a very busy wahine! I'm hoping now that the new semester is in full swing and the new classes have gotten used to how things go that life will slow down a little bit so that I can breathe. Of course, if it doesn't, I'll cope! I always do! One last thing! Here she is, the little bit and newest member of my family. Hie | | Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 | | 12:32 pm |
Every time I return to da big island for Christmas, I realize how much better it is than where I am currently living. I'm not saying anything foul about South Carolina, per se. It's just, oh gosh, I don't know. I'm suited for island life so much better than the hustle and bustle and materialism of the mainland. All of their politics and needs and wants. When I'm back in Hawai'i, I spend the entire time with ohana. Ohana means family. We all know this, thanks to Lilo and Stitch, but it's the truth. We share, laugh, talk, surf. We celebrate, sure, but it's more about food and family and friends than giving and receiving gifts. It's a tradition for my faddah and I to go surfing on Christmas morning before anyone else gets up. Originally, I think it was his way of keeping me from waking up everyone in the house before dawn, but it turned into something that he and I do every Christmas morning now. I'm not sure what I'll do if I ever miss that. The other tradition is for my friends and I to participate in the illegal activity of hiking out to the lava flow in Kalapana at 3am the day after Christmas. We sing and dance and my fire dancing friends light their respective props from the flow and perform until dawn. It's incredible. It still amazes me that, even though so many of us have gone our separate ways, we still manage to come together for a week every year and participate in the traditions that make us ohana. And we're still as close as ever. I wouldn't have it any other way. All of that said, I'm going to share some pictures of my trip now, while everyone else is still asleep. It's 6am here. I'm wide awake because I'm still on east coast SC time. ( Christmas in Hawai'i )

Gosh I've been so busy the past week and a half that I haven't even been able to think about checking the computer! Let me see if I can list the things that have happened in brief recap.
1) My fellow islander (though not da big island) Caleb moved in to my spare room. It's nice to have someone around that understands and doesn't look at me funny when I slip and forget to speak Southern American. It is comforting. I didn't realize just how much I missed being around other islanders. That's not to say that I don't fully enjoy my Southern friends and my Desert Rats. XD I do. I just.. it's nice to be around someone like Caleb for a change. His daughter is amazing, also. She showed up on Monday. She is absolutely amazing. This just proves that I one day want a keiki of my own!
2) I spent a lot of time cooking and getting prepared for Thanksgiving. I made Caleb help me put the tent up. I had to go buy another space heater, because it was supposed to be cold and the tent got larger this year. Turns out? It wasn't so cold after all. It was actually a wonderfully mild day so that eating in the tent will all of these incredible people around me was fantastic. I could not have asked for a better day, though I was entirely too amused by the complaints that it is too warm for the end of November. This is me not complaining about the warmth. XD Fate came and helped me cook. That was fun. Hopefully he doesn't think I'm too crazy. I really enjoyed having him here. The turn out was amazing. Some of the people I expected to show up, sadly, could not make it because of other things in their lives. I fully understand. (Hopefully they know that there are left overs and they are welcome to come eat them any time until it's all gone.) Extra people showed up that I wasn't expecting. So it worked out. I think my favorite part was going around the mondo table and seeing what everyone was thankful for. So many things and people! I feel like I need to write them all down at some point.
3) Jessica and I went Black Friday shopping. INTENSE! These wahine around here? They get cut-throat. We watched a woman get arrested for getting in a fist fight over the last bicycle. I mean... oh my goodness! I did fulfill my need for The Big Bang Theory, though. :D And new bedding! And a new TELEVISION! Gabe still hasn't seen it. I can't wait for him to, since he was always teasing me about my tiny little tele that I got when I moved here.
4) College Football. Saturday all of my cheerleaders and dance team girls came over for Thanksgiving Reboot (where we all supply left overs, reheat, and sit in the living room watching movies and grinding). We christened the new television! We got caught up watching football after the first movie. We watched Auburn get trampled by Alabama, Florida State almost shut out Florida, and the biggest came of all, we watched the Gamecocks whip the Tigers. I though Caleb was going to kill us for waking up everyone in the house and the neighborhood at 11:00 last night when the game ended.
Today is my lazy day. I have to some how recover from the past week in one day before I return to work tomorrow. I would be alright if I could just.. sleep through Christmas at this point. Unfortunately, the life of a teacher does not allot for that. I hope everyone had as eventful a week as I did filled with love, joy, and happiness. The only thing that would have made it better was ohana, but.. really.. surrounded by the friends that I've made here, I can't complain too much. I am so very lucky in all of my awkwardness and weirdness to be where I am, surrounded by these wonderful people, doing what I love. :) | | Wednesday, November 9th, 2011 | | 8:35 pm |
Mo'junk. It's just not my week, haha. After making a floundering mess of myself which I will not be getting into right now because I'm still feeling ridiculous about that, junk happened. I got pulled into the principal's office today. Principal Kerr dropped by the dance studio yesterday, which is not unusual? I have an open door policy to parents, teachers, and administration for my dance and cheer practices I have nothing to hide during dance team and cheerleading practices, why should I be worried about the principal coming by? One of the girls' mother's complained that the dance we've been working on for our competition, which is coming up in after Thanksgiving, is too provocative. I was really surprised. For those that know me, I'm not the most... skilled at, er, the suggestive. In fact, I thought the dance was kind of tame. I eased up on the technical because all of my seniors graduated last year, and I have a lot of newbies to train this year. I'm not even counting on them placing in the competition. It's not about that anyway, but I'm not holding them to that standard this time. Not yet. Spring will be a different story. Right now, I just want them to go and experience it. They do a lot of drop moves in this dance, though, which is what I'm supposing is the problem for this particular parent. I wasn't given a name, but I knew who it was. She had reservations when she came with her daughter to auditions. I explained what I did, and even offered to show her videos of the previous dance performances we've had. She said she trusted me to "do right by" her girl. >.> Apparently not. So I've been warned. I have to do something about this or the dance team will be disbanded. I honestly don't think this is fair. The girls have worked very hard. For their skill level, they're doing wonderfully. The GIRLS love the dance and have fun doing it. Shouldn't it be about them? It's fo'shua not about me. I don't do it for the parents or the administration. I do it because the girls at the high school wanted something like this as an option. We don't have time to learn an entirely new dance before competition. It looks like I'm going to be racking my brain to figure out how to right this for one parent before then. Give me your opinion. Do you think the dance is too provocative for high school girls? Bass Down Low - MBHS Dance Team Current Mood: anxious | | Sunday, October 23rd, 2011 | | 12:57 am |
Is it normal for someone like me to be awake at this hour of night, on the computer, preparing for Monday already? I'd like to say no, but I'm in the process of making it the new norm. Or, at least, I'm making a habit of it. Sad, I know! I inherited an Honors English IV class a few weeks into school while the administration works through a situation with another teacher. It was a bit of a surprise, but I'm actually enjoying it! We have been working on Shakespeare. I find it necessary to really push my honors students, and this is one of our big units this year. We've looked at all of the different plays, discussed plot, characters, and setting. You know, the basics. They put themselves into groups, and picked one of the plays we discussed to pick apart and decide a theme for. For the past two weeks, they've been working on scripts to bring in the plays into modern day. The setting was their choice - we have a beach setting for the Tempest, street gangs in Romeo and Juliet, a Wiccan Coven for Macbeth, just to name a few. It's really interesting! The groups start performing this week. They're required to stay true to the theme they uncovered while deconstructing their play choice. I will be recording them, and we'll have an encore viewing at the end of the week. While my kids were deconstructing their plays, they were allowed to use the internet, books, and other adaptions as resources, as long as they credited them. One of my students showed up last week with this site: CliffsNotes Films. Apparently, they're focusing on Shakespeare because of the new film Anonymous coming out next week. I was skeptical at first, but really? They did a very good job breaking down the plays that they posted films for. If you've ever been curious about A Midsummer Night's Dream or Hamlet or Othello, but didn't have the time to read it or the patience to pick through Shakespeare's incredible use of language, now is the time! They're short, animated, and entertaining. I recommend it, but I don't know how long it will be up before they change. Yes, I just wrote an entire journal about teaching at 1am on Sunday morning. I think most 27 year olds are still out drinking at this time of night on the weekends. I am alarmed at my need for more of a social life. I'm going to have to change this before it becomes severe and I turn old without realizing it. | | Thursday, October 13th, 2011 | | 7:56 pm |

Let's get physical. Get down, get hard, get mean! The homecoming game is coming up on Friday, October 14th, for anyone interested. We, collectively, are so fo' shua excited.
I've been gearing my girls on the cheer leading squad and the dance team up for Homecoming Week since the beginning of the school year. We've got new dances this year for the pep rallies and new cheers for the game. They've been working extra hard on decorations, posters, and costumes for the week. They voted to meet me in the parking lot tomorrow to finish up their float and decorations, since we're off on the 10th. I call that dedication. Then again, they know by know that I don't half ass anything.
I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited. Granted, I've only been a part of this school for two years, this being my third, but homecoming is a BIG thing here! We didn't really do homecoming activities in Hawai'i. Sports weren't that big of a deal for us. Everything was on Hawaii time. We did things bumbye style. Getting pumped up for the big game against St. James High School is fun! It's something that the kids live for. How can I deny them?
I was making a list of all the things the girls would need to be able to finish up, and I realized that they were going to need food since the school is closed and the cafeteria workers are off. I've decided that I'm going to make the girls a snack from back home. I just have to figure out how much I'll need and go get all of the ingredients from The Pig. One wouldn't think that a a group of girls could eat that much, but these girls are athletes. Sometimes I think these girls could out-eat the football team. If I'm going to get what I need and fix it before I go to bed, I better get started now. |
